More and more Greeks re-join the Old Religion of Olympian Gods

It seems like there is a widely growing neo-Pagan community in Greece (too). Young or old, men or women, gay or straight turn to worship the Old Olympian Gods once again. To many it seems irrational although Greeks never stopped – at least – honouring the Old Gods. More and more Greeks name their children after the Old Gods & Goddesses, nymphs and ancient heroes.

The Cult of Olympian Gods is Revived

It seems like there is a widely growing neo-Pagan community in Greece (too).  Young or old, men or women, gay or straight turn to worship the Old Olympian Gods once again. To many it seems irrational although Greeks never stopped – at least – honouring the Old Gods. More and more Greeks name their children after the Old Olympian Gods & Goddesses, nymphs and ancient heroes. Although Christianity played a very important role in forming modern Greek History (sometimes helpful and sometimes devastating) Greeks seem more eager to ask Zeus’s or Apollo’s help. They might actually continue to worship Jesus yet they start to acknowledge the Olympians” power too.

Is this Real?

The main “problem” of the Old Religion is that there are many institutions which try to answer the Greeks” need to worship the Old Olympian Gods. Worship is not permitted in ancient temples yet many try to overlap this obstacle by worshiping the Old Gods in the shadows of the Majestic Mount Olympus, like “Prometheia”.

Prometheia is the Celebration of the Summer Solstice, honouring Prometheus, the demi-God and forefather of all Human kind, who “stole” the Fire of Olympian Gods in Mount Olympus only to give it to humans (read more about Prometheus here). The Fire symbolising wisdom and craftsmanship was the greatest gift Human kind ever received. Prometheia, embodies a sereis of rituals many of them were re-created by the Stockholm University Professor of Philosophy, Dr. Tryphon Olympios.

As we read “a multitude of visitors from Greece and abroad gather every year at the fabulous natural surroundings of the Prometheus Grove (Alsos Prometheus) at the foot of Mount Olympus to exchange opinions, honour the ancient philosophers, to breathe the refreshing air of the countryside, to camp setting their tents and many of them to spend the night talking and stargazing on the Mountain of the Olympian Gods”.

It seems that there is a lot to be done here so that the Worshippers of the Old Olympian Gods would be free to perform their ancient rituals. Yet even now anyone can visit Greece and join the festival of Light & Fire in Olympus along with like-minded worshippers. The celebrations of Prometheia will take place on 7, 8, 9, 10 July 2016. Message us for more details on how to travel there. Blessed be!
