This have been the core belief of many religions and philosophers over the centuries.
In early Vedic scripture, Maya, the illusion of the phenomenal world, was the power with which the gods created and maintained the material universe. Maya is introduced in Rig Veda, referring to the power with witch the Devas (Hindu deities) could assume various material forms and to materialise natural phenomena.
Buddhists believe that the world we live in is actually an Illusion and by detoxing ourselves from “Reality” and pleasures will help us find peace and nirvana. Gnostics, the ancient branch of Christianity, though the same way. Desire is a curse and traps our spirits in a un-finished and not perfect world. Our every day stimuli is just a way to keep our minds busy from the “Truth”. What is this Truth?
Plato, one of the most influential philosophers of all time, explores the idea that the real world is an illusion in the allegory of the cave in The Republic. Plato describes a cave in which all people have been kept prisoners since birth bound to look only straight ahead, not behind them or to the side. Because of the little light that enters the cave all they can see is just flickering shadows in the shape of people, trees, and animals. Because these images are all they’ve ever seen, they think these images constitute the whole world. One day, one these poor prisoners escape this cave. Although at first he has a hard time adjusting to the Light of the Sun (Wisdom’s Light) he ultimately manages to comprehend what the Real World is. Blessed with Wisdom and Happiness, he decides to visit back the Cave and teach about the real World to the other Prisoners. Of course this is just a metaphor that we are eternal divine souls trapped in our human bodies , only waiting to be freed. All those Religious paths teach several ways to break free from desire and pain. Some teach meditation, others witchcrafts, others prayer or even Astral Projection. This concept was widely re-introduced in Western Civilisation in 1999 by “the Matrix”, starring Keanu Reeves, a masterpiece of modern Cinema, inspiring sequels, other movies, series and tons of books basically repeating the same idea, that we all live in an illusion.
As it turns out its not just a very interesting idea expressed by Spiritual Teachers, Witches, Gurus and Philosophers. Modern Scientists and cutting-edge Technology Entrepreneurs are convinced that we live in a Simulation. The Billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk , stated in June 2016 that “the odds are a billion to one against us living in base reality. If we aren’t actually living through a simulation, then all human life is probably about to come to an end and so we should hope that we are living in one.”. In the same way, Google’s master of artificial intelligence thinks that “maybe our whole universe is a science experiment of some junior high-school student in another universe”. Moreover Niels Bohr, a famous Danish Physicist who made significant contributions to understanding quantum physics stated that “if quantum mechanics hasn’t profoundly shocked you, you haven’t understood it yet. Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real.” Quantum physics discovered that our material reality, isn’t really physical at all. It’s pure energy.
