Who are the Real Wonder Women?
Αs the historical existence of the Amazons has been the topic of long scientific debate (like Atlantis) there are many historical records which describe in detail many of their distinctive characteristics. Wonder Woman is the beginning of a much more interesting adventure…
Let’s begin our journey to this mystical tribe of mighty and wise women, the Amazons. The Origin and Name of Amazons Apollonius Rhodius, an ancient author who lived back at 295bc, while narrating the mythical story of Argonautica, mentions the Amazons, a tribe of female warriors, who were the daughters of Ares (God of war) and Harmonia (a nymph of the Akmonian Wood, is the immortal goddess of harmony and concord).
In fact, he mentions about a nymph of the Akmonian Wood, near Themiscyra, an area located in today’s Black Sea (so that’s true Wonder Woman ! ), named Harmonia who she was loved by the god Ares and bore him girls who fell in love with fighting, the Amazons. So actually, yes, it was believed to be the might daughters of Gods but not Zeus. Their name, Amazons, probably means “without breast”, which connects the tribe with a famous tradition once claimed by Marcus Justinus who alleged that these wonder women had their right breast cut off or burnt out.
This story actually comes from the mouth of Hippocrates, the father of modern Medicine. He tells us that their mothers burned the right breast, to reduce the development of it and therefore so the girls can develop a stronger and muscular right arm and shoulder. Other ancient historians though, believe that their names may come from another etymological source – probably Sanskrit – and be translated as “the daughters of the moon”, “without a husband”, “honourable”, “warrior”, “mother and mistress”. But apart from Amazons, they were also called by other names like “killers – destroyers of men”, “those who loathe all men” and “those who fight like men”.
The Rituals of Amazons: the Daughters of the Moon
According to what we already know about the Amazons, no men were permitted to reside in Amazon country; but once a year around the 1st of May – the Beltane – in order to prevent their race from dying out, they visited the Gargareans, a neighbouring tribe. The Gargareans also, in accordance with an ancient custom, would go there to offer sacrifice to Ares and the other Gods and Goddesses with the Amazons. Then they have sex with the Amazons probably in a very ritual way. As the ancient ceremony took place in secrecy and darkness, any Gargareans meted at random with any Amazon.
Once the ritual was over, they were sure they were blessed with a child send the men away, out of their land. Any females that were born are retained by the Amazons themselves, but the males would be taken to the Gargareans to be brought up. Each Gargareans to whom a child is brought would adopt the child as his own, regarding the child as his son because of his uncertainty.
Other than this brief period of the year, many speculate that the Amazons had sexual intercourses with themselves, being the first lesbian nation in history. Although this may be doubted by other historians, it was widely believed for centuries as homosexuality was not fraud upon in the ancient years.
